18 Months Old

Where do I begin? Jack seems to change daily and so there is much to say since I last blogged about his milestones. He's continuing to get better and better at communicating. He knows lots of words and tries to tell us about whatever he's seeing or thinking about. He is adding new words on a regular basis-some we can understand and some we can't. His new words include: banana, Seahawks, baseball, touchdown, cheese, keys and cheers (all three which sound the same), baby, bird, bug, grandpa (Papa) hey and Oh No! And he just started saying "Mommy" on occasion. Whatever he can't verbalize, he can usually communicate by pointing. The other day, he told me he wanted cream cheese on his bagel by pointing to the fridge and then to the bagel he was snacking on. He also lets us know when he wants us to come play with him by pointing to or patting the floor next to him. Jack pays a lot of attention to what people around him are saying or talking about and will do signs or point to whatever he hears. We really have to be on our toes with him around!

He still loves music and singing. He's starting to catch on to tunes and will sing with us when he's going to sleep. He gets stuck on "EIEIO" and can sing "Now I know" for the ABCs. He tries to do the motions to Itsy Bitsy Spider and Where is Thumbkin, and shakes his finger and says "No, No" to Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. And one of my favorite things is when he's calling for Mama or Dada in his sing-song voice. It melts my heart every time.
Jack loves being chased and tickled and tries to tickle us back. If we ask him to stop and listen or to be quiet, he'll put his fingers to his lip and shushes. He also learned how to do somersaults and sometimes the whole family ends up on the living room floor somersaulting. Daddy has also taught Jack how to play air guitar so if he sees a guitar, he'll do his little motion, and hum. He also has two wooden spoons that act as his guitar sometimes. It's one of the cutest things ever! He might need a guitar for Christmas! He also still loves playing with cars and trucks, lining them up and pushing them all over, making a vrooming sound as he plays. He's very curious, wanting to push buttons and pull levers (I caught him one day standing on his little activity table pushing the buttons on the stereo), but he's also very cautious, usually sticking close by our sides in new situations. One of his favorite things to do right now is play in the car. He'll crawl right into the passenger seat when we're getting ready to go somewhere and will push all the buttons to the stereo and turn the heat up and the lights on. You never know what will happen when you turn the car on! But, really, who knew time in the car could be so much fun?!
If we do something one time, Jack will remember it so, like I said before, we have to be on our toes! We taught him how to cheers, so now he really likes to clink classes with us. We've taught him how to make his bath toy fish kiss, so now he carries them around and makes them kiss with a "mwah" sound. He has to blow his nose into a tissue whenever he hears Daddy doing it. And I tried doing some exercises on the floor once with weights and now my little drill sergeant thinks I need to get down on the floor and do it everyday. I guess I don't need a personal trainer with Jack around! Right now, he's trying to learn how to jump, so he'll crawl up on the ottoman and try to jump (right now, it's actually falling) to Daddy on the couch.
Jack recognizes lots of different animals and knows they're sounds. It's my favorite thing to show off right now: the little sniffing nose for a pig, the "eow eow" with the squinted eyes for a kitty (see pic above), the sucked in lips for a fish or blowing through his lips for a horse or elephant. He also recognizes things that are mine or Brett's. He knows when Daddy's home because he sees his car or he finds my shoes and brings them to me saying "Mama." We mention Grandpa in any context and Jack will talk about him for the rest of the day. My other favorite thing is when he's doing something he really thinks is funny he'll stop what he's doing and say "Mama" until I stop and watch whatever he's doing. He's a total ham, soaking up every bit of attention!
Eighteen months seems like a big milestone for me. I can't believe Jack's been in our lives for a year and a half already. We really don't remember what our lives were like before we were blessed with this awesome, energetic, funny little man. Every stage I think is so amazing and wonderful and then it just gets better. I am filled with so much love!
