Introducing Jack McLeod Williams

Jack McLeod Williams made his appearance on Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 1:54 pm. He was 7 lbs 10 oz and 21.5 inches long. Smaller than expected but quite a long little guy. He is absolutely perfect! Since he's almost 5 days old and this is my first post since then (been a little busy), I thought I'd do a little recap of his first couple days of life.
Pre-Game We went into the hospital Sunday morning to be induced. At my doctor's appointment on Friday, Dr. Holtzman thought we should give it a try since I was full term and my blood pressure was still high. She didn't think there was any reason to wait. But there was also no guarantee it would work. Brett and I were both a little shocked to be actually setting a time to try and have the baby, but given the option of Saturday or Sunday decided on Sunday. We got there at 6 am and they started me on Prostaglandin to get things started and then later moved me to Pitocin. We just hung out at the hospital all day as my contractions increasingly got worse. When I had not dilated very much at all by 10 pm that night, we had the option to go home or to break my water. I really didn't want to force my baby out and I was exhausted, so we decided to go home and give it a few days and see if I would go into labor on my own. We made an appointment to go back on Friday if I didn't.
Birth Day My contractions were supposed to go away within an hour or so after we left the hospital. My doctor prescribed me Ambien to help me relax and go to sleep. We came home and finished a movie and went to bed. But my contractions didn't go away. At about 3 am, I woke up Brett by punching the bed and swearing and he called the hospital. We went back and I hadn't progressed much. I could either get a shot of morphine and go back home or have my water broken. Brett and I walked the halls and waited for Dr. Holtzman, who ended up calling and telling us we should go for it, which I had pretty much decided at that point. The anesthesiologist was right there to give me an epidural and pretty soon I was pain free. Dr. Holtzman came in sometime between 7 and 8 am and broke my water. At this point, I had dilated to 4 cm. Brett and I tried to get some sleep until Dr. Kaepernick (Dr. Holtzman was off duty at that point) came in at about noon. She checked me and said "Wow, you're fully dilated and his head is right there! I'm going to go deliver in the next room and then I'll be right back to deliver you!" Brett and I couldn't believe it! I was hardly feeling anything and he had people bringing him coffee and lunch! He ran out to the lobby to meet them and came back just in time for me to start pushing. I pushed for less than an hour and a half and he was out! So much better and easier than I would ever expect! And he was absolutely beautiful and perfect and so cute! We were instantly in love. Poor Jack was a little traumatized, though, and he cried for over an hour after he was born. It wasn't until Daddy swaddled him super tight that he calmed down and ever since that's been a surefire way to almost instantly soothe him.
More to come...I am not as productive as I once was!
